Cascade Chapter Sierra Club Resolution:
Aerial Spraying of Btk for Gypsy Moth in Ballard/Magnolia

The Cascade Chapter (Washington state chapter) Sierra Club adopted the following resolution:

Resolution in Opposition to WSDA's Proposal for Aerial Spraying of Foray 48B to Combat Asian Gypsy Moths in Ballard and Magnolia Neighborhoods in Seattle

Whereas the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) has not provided adequate, timely and meaningful public notification and opportunity for public participation regarding its proposed spray program to residents of the proposed spray zone and to residents of other neighborhoods that may be affected; and

Whereas the SEPA Environmental checklist and Determination of Non-Significance issued by WSDA are woefully inadequate and further were not made sufficiently accessible to concerned members of the public; and

Whereas the Sierra Club supports the use of least-toxic alternatives such as trapping whenever possible in order to protect and maintain healthy populations of moths, butterflies, birds, fish and other wildlife as well as human health,

Therefore it is resolved that the Sierra Club is opposed to the proposed spraying program as it is currently being pursued, and calls on the WSDA to engage in a good-faith effort to inform and engage the public, including holding a public hearing in the Ballard/ Magnolia area, and to provide complete and non-misleading information to the public, including disclosure of all components and likely contaminants of Foray 48B.

Passed by unanimous consent, 3-18-00
