- New
research is emerging showing that
the toxin
produced by the Bt organism (the active
ingredient in sprays such as
Foray 48B) do not completely break down in
the human gut, as industry

Moth invades California!
Will the response be as
devastating as in New
Zealand? California
will primarily use mating
disruption biochemical
spray (with an unknown
long-term safety record),
not Foray 48B. But other
pesticides will also be
used to spray almost 700
square miles
(including most of San Francisco,
Monterey, Santa Cruz,
and other cities) in
mid-August 2008 (As of
early 2011, San Francisco
has avoided spraying by
use of concerted legal and
public protests).

WASHINGTON STATE GYPSY MOTH
CATCHES for 2010-2012
|
 |
This map shows the location of all gypsy moth catches (all were the European
variety) by the WSDA. Pheromone attractant traps were used.
A dot in the center of the icon signifies more than one moth was found at
that location for that year. Click on the icon to see how many
were trapped.
Spraying guidelines: in general, moths trapped in one locale over a
period of 3 years will trigger pesticide spraying. The time to spraying may be
shortened if many moths are found, or other lifestages are located. A single
Asian gypsy moth detection will trigger an aerial spraying over a square mile
area.
2013: There could be spraying in
the area of the Starfire Soccer Complex in Tukwila. The spray will
likely have adverse effects as it drifts into the adjacent Green River
and the Black River Riparian Forest.
Asian gypsy moth egg masses were found at the Port of Tacoma on a ship (indicated on the map). This may prompt a one square mile aerial spraying of the Port, either summarily this year, or in 2014. Stay tuned...

PAST YEARS' SPRAYING AND TRAPPING
No spraying happened in Washington for 2012. Some "infestations" died out naturally or were trapped out of existence.
The area adjacent
to the South Hill Mall in Puyallup
was sprayed again in 2011.
The WSDA's first treatment of this
area in 2010 failed. This is
somewhat common with Btk (Foray
48) pesticides. A mass-trapping
grid (designed to trap as many
male moths as possible before they
can locate a mate) was deployed.
By spraying this area this year,
there will be no data to indicate
whether mass trapping (a much
safer strategy) worked or not.
WSDA will likely claim, if the
infestation is wiped out, that the
spraying or the combination was
what was effective, not the mass
trapping alone.
Mass trapping has worked in
Washington State - for example,
the 2005 Crown Hill (Seattle)
infestation appeared to have been
eradicated with mass trapping.
